The Ballarat Community Garden is located in central Ballarat, Victoria, Australia on land managed by the Ballarat City Council.

The BCG  was built in 2004/2005 after several years of planning and lobbying. Approximately 75 beds have been built and, at any given time, we have a waiting list of applicants. The BCG has a Committee of Management consisting of a President, Secretary and Treasurer, plus a variable number of “ordinary” members. All of these positions are filled on a voluntary basis.

Features and Facilities

  • Beds are approximately 3 x 3 metres.
  • Several beds are raised to be more comfortable to people with mobility problems.
  • Water is provided by hoses connected to both town and tank water.
  • We have several sheds to house equipment and a “big” shed” for meetings, socialising and storage.
  • There are solar panels on the big shed roof to supply electricity and we have a wood heater for winter.
  • We also have communal compost heaps and we often have  communal fertiliser and mulch piles.
  • We have toilet facilities.
  • We also have a greenhouse, two pizza ovens, a communal herb garden, a small orchard, a native garden and chooks.
  • We often host workshops and demonstrations relevant to gardening.

Please note:

Membership is open to individuals, families and organisations. Dues are payable on an annual basis and members are expected to contribute to the garden through working bees, helping with fundraisers such as the Harvest Festival and other activities such as sausage sizzles.
