The Ballarat Community Garden is growing and developing with the active support of a range of partnerships across community groups, non-government and government organisations
We operate sustainably in a manner that is inclusive of and accountable to its membership, enabling it to continue to grow and develop in the years ahead.
The Ballarat Community Garden (BCG Inc) has developed from a groundswell of interested local people over the past eight years. The volunteer Committee of Management; with the active assistance of PACT Community Support, has established a membership-based garden on a large fenced site 150 x 35 metres. The Garden provides gardening and social benefits to over 80 community members, growing vegetables, sharing watering and other garden resources, sharing knowledge, building friendships and producing nutritious food for themselves and their networks.
During 2009, the Community Garden has added a hothouse, pizza oven, communal herb garden and a childrens' play area to its amenities. We have also been fortunate to be awarded some funding for a disability toilet which should arrive soon. This latest acquisition will mean accessibility for everyone, fundamental to our philosophy. It has also been the year during which BCG 'came of age' and became incorporated.
Events conducted throughout 2009 have included a multicultural dinner, several gardening related workshops, working bees and our Christmas party, all held at the Community Garden. Every Thursday morning garden members can be found socialising in the shed, a regular 'cuppa and chat' time to which members of the wider community are invited.

Ballarat has had a long, cold, wet winter this year. According to the Bureau of Meterology, we have had in excess of 150 mm and August is not over yet. Lake Wendouree is looking full at last and hopefully water reserves have improved significantly all over the region.
The weather has put a bit of a damper (so to speak) on visiting the garden, but behind the scenes, folks have been orgainising a fundraiser and preparing for the seedling propagation workshop with John Ditchburn on this Sunday. We can also look forward to being one of the participants in the Ballarat Gardens in spring 2010 event. We have been listed as inspirational in the adverstising brochure, so let's hope we all get inspired to pitch in and do our spring planting as soon as we see a bit sun. See you soon at the working bee coming up.
